  1. Beautiful, unusually shaped, functionally excellent knife 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Feb 2018

This knife has a delightfully unusually shaped handle made of bone, a shape that fits perfectly in the hand and allows for a very secure grip. I like to study all of my new knives under a magnifying glass and a bright light, taking into account that they are handmade. Handmade knives are by their very nature going to have imperfections and asymmetrical craving and engraving. The handle has some black divots along the top edge of the handle. It might be a natural part of the bone but I'm not educated enough about animal bone to know. In any case, these divots are small and somewhat "camouflaged" by the decorative filework on the spine on the top of the handle.

There are some superficial vertical grooves near the bolster of the bone scale on one side of the handle, apparently made by some sort of grinding tool. Otherwise the bone is uniform in color and very attractive. The bone is also smooth yet not slippery. The pins on both sides of the handle are flush with the bone scales. The two brass caps on each end of the handle are very bright but have a few fine scratches.

The blade has a beautiful Damascus pattern and the wide drop point shape compliments the shape of the handle well. The blade edge was not as sharp as I had hoped but I easily gave it a very sharp edge using nothing more than a ceramic sharpening rod. One very unusual feature of the knife is that it doesn't have the type of blade locking mechanism that most folding knife have. It has neither the liner lock nor the push button release on the top of the knife. This type of knife uses an internal spring that makes it intentionally difficult to open and close the knife and works well to immobilize the blade when in the open position. The knife fits easily into the premium full grain leather sheath and the leather flap snap closure functions perfectly to keep the knife from inadvertently falling out. There is a strap riveted flat against the back of the sheath to allow one to wear it on a belt.

Even with a few imperfections, this is a beautiful well functioning folding knife that I'm proud to have in my collection of handmade knives.

  2. Mechanically sound, well made and artistically shaped 5 Star Review

This knife's handle has some black divots along the top edge of the handle. It's probably a natural part of the bone but I'm not educated enough about animal bone to know. In any case, these divots are small and somewhat "camouflaged" by the decorative sawtooth metal spine on the top of the handle.

There are some superficial vertical grooves toward the bolster of the bone scale on one side, apparently made by some sort of grinding tool. Otherwise the bone is uniform in color and very attractive. The bone is also smooth yet not slippery. The pins on both sides of the handle are flush with the bony scales. The two brass caps on each end of the handle have a few fine scratches but nothing significant.

The blade has a beautiful Damascus pattern and the wide drop point shape compliments the shape of the handle well. One very unusual feature of the knife is that it has no locking mechanism that most folding knife have. It has neither the liner lock nor the push button release on the top of the knife. This type of knife uses a strong internal spring that makes it difficult to close the knife, intentionally or unintentionally, and thus works well to immobilize the blade when in the open position. The knife fits easily into the premium full grain leather sheath and the leather flap snap closure functions perfectly to keep the knife from inadvertently falling out. Overall, this is a beautiful well functioning folding knife that I'm proud to have in my collection of handmade knives.
